Image Resizing & Resolution
The rose image below (retrieved from Just Our Pictures) was used to experiment with resizing and resolution. It was opened in Painter and reduced the image resolution to 10%. As it was a small image (small resolution) to start with, this had a dramatic effect, depicting very pixelated image. The original image (on the right) is 2,473,984 bytes while the new image (on the left) is 1,693 bytes. Consequently, the original image is a good size for the computer and mobile devices, but is not suitable for photographs or big enlargements. While the image on the left would be suitable to use in emails as a logo (a very small size no larger than 2cm).
RGB Colour Experimentation
Using word I experimented with different RGB combinations. It was very interesting to gain a deeper understanding about the RGB saturation colour combinations.
Meeting the
Foundation to Year 2 Elaboration
ACTDIK002
The following task is a great way to explore this elaboration for Grade 1 students in a meaningful way for students.
An introduction to the activity would involve explanation about the terms resolution and pixel. And much collaborative discussion should take place during and after each step to explore what has happened to develop a deep understanding about the processes.

- Take a picture with an IPad or digital camera.
- Upload the image to the computer.
- Open the picture using painter.
- Click "resize"
- Click "pixels"
- Half the number (e.g. 2400 to 1200pixels)
- Then remove 1 digit (e.g. 1200 would become 120pixels)
- Then open a word document and insert the three images.
- Make each image the same size and print them out.
- Students and teacher would then engage in collaborative discussion about what has happened to the image, how it has happened and when this would be used (i.e. emailing, social media etc.).
